Police has arrested a man, suspected to be the motorcyclist who knocked dead veteran journalist Teddy Seezi Cheeye in Nakawa at the beginning of this month. The former director of economic monitoring in the Internal Security Organisation (ISO), Cheeye was knocked dead by a motorcycle (boda boda) on March 1 while crossing the road from Shell petrol station in Nakawa Division in the city centre, Kampala. He died instantly. he suspect identified as Rogers Kirya was arrested from Kinawattaka, a suburb of Kampala while riding on a motorcycle registration number UEH 773R. The registration number had been identified from the CCTV footage captured at Shell petrol station on the day Cheeye was killed. A source at Jinja Road police station where the suspect is currently detained told URN that traffic police had been on the lookout for the particular motorcycle following clues from the CCTV footage. Kirya faces charges of causing death through reckless driving. According to police, 32-year-old Kirya admitted to knocking dead Cheeye, but insisted that it was purely an accident. He reportedly, in a statement, told police that Cheeye was knocked because he crossed the road at the time when the traffic lights had gone green. However, it is common practice especially in the city centre for boda boda cyclists to drive through red lights. At the time of his death, Cheeye had only been out of prison for a year having been convicted by the Anti-Corruption Court in April 2009 for embezzling Shs 120 million from the Global Fund and sentenced to 10 years in jail. He, however, served only six of the ten years and was released a year ago for good conduct. He was also ordered to refund Shs 110 million of the money he embezzled.
